For thirty years the Route 31 and 62 intersection downtown was the worst bottleneck in the northwest suburbs. Since August 2024 there is a way around it, and knowing that is worth fifteen minutes.
The Longmeadow Parkway Bridge opened to traffic on 29 August 2024 after a thirty-year effort — 5.6 miles of new roadway from Huntley/Boyer Road across to Route 62, running through Algonquin, Carpentersville and Barrington Hills. It is toll-free, and it is the single biggest change to how anyone gets in and out of Algonquin in a generation.
It matters because the alternative is the downtown Route 31 and Route 62 intersection, identified as a critical regional chokepoint in a 1996 congestion study and a reliable source of long delays ever since. A driver who does not know the bridge exists will still be routing through the old bottleneck.
One more thing worth getting right: the village's long-running Founders' Days was cancelled in 2025 and replaced. The event is now Algonquin Fest, running 30 July to 2 August 2026 at Ted Spella Community Park. Plenty of listings still carry the old name.

Does the winter parking ban affect an early pickup?
It can. From 31 October to 15 April there is no street parking between 2:00am and 5:00am, and none at all after a two-inch snowfall until the street is cleared. We time arrival rather than wait on the street.

Which Metra station serves Algonquin?
None inside the village. Crystal Lake, Pingree Road and Fox River Grove, all on the UP-NW line, are the practical options. Pingree Road publishes a $1.50 daily parking rate.
